No Motive but a Suspect

Apart from a headache, and a very un-Australian paleness, Alex seemed unharmed when Pauline picked her up at the hospital the next day.

“You look fine,” Pauline reassured Alex when she was asked for her opinion.

“England’s an exciting place,” Alex said, getting into the car. “I’ve never had so many serious incidents in one week. First being mowed down by a drunk driver and now knocked out by a mugger.”

“It seems odd, doesn’t it,” Pauline said, “but it can’t be anything to do with your quest because,"

“I know,” Alex interjected, “the estate was left to two cousins.”

“Is that why you were out alone?”

Alex blushed guiltily. “Sorry,” she said. “To be honest, I thought you were nuts, imagining there was someone out to kill me. Now, the coincidence of these two events has made me a bit scared. I know it can’t have anything to do with the will, but something strange is going on. I’d be pleased to have you as my escort for the next while.”

“You’re right, it can’t be the will,” Pauline said, and recounted to Alex what Jim had told her.

“Then what is it?” Alex demanded. “I don’t know anyone here.”

Pauline frowned. “Maybe there was something left outside the will?”

“If that’s true, it still doesn’t explain it.”

“I think we have to assume someone knows something and your presence has unnerved them,” Pauline said.

“And I know who it’ll be,” Alex said. She told Pauline what she’d read in the newspapers. “One of those cousins is doing this. My money is on the rock star because I’ve just remembered, Celia Ormiston told me he lives here and in London, so he had the opportunity.”

Pauline laughed. “I don’t like rock stars either,” she said, “but we have to consider. If this person thinks you can take whatever it is from them, they must know you are actually descended from the de Cheney’s, which we know is really unlikely.”

“Well, he has some motive, that’s for sure,” Alex said. “All we have to do is find out what it is. I didn’t get to play detective at The Mousetrap show you promised but I am going to get to the bottom of this. This second attack has given me fresh hope.”

“I’m pleased to have you aboard,” Pauline said. “The first attack caught my attention.”

“We’ll be a detective team,” Alex said, “like they have on TV.” She paused, her eyes shining, and then added, “You know, I don’t think I’ve ever felt this alive.”

“Well, partner,” Pauline said, “if you plan to keep being alive, from now on you go nowhere without me, or someone else who understands the risk.”

“I see that now,” Alex said, “and I’ll stick to you like glue but what do you say to my idea? It must be him, mustn’t it?”

“We can easily check his location, I would think,” Pauline said thoughtfully. “Someone like him will have plenty of people watching. Someone in the village will know if he’s here or in London right now and if he was in London when the first attack happened and here when the second one happened.
